Hao Tran, CEO of Vietcetera, announces that Vietnamese American culture writer Dan Q. Dao joined Vietcetera as International Digital Director. In this newly-created role, Dao is collaborating on all aspects of Vietcetera’s International Edition, including English-language content strategy, audience development, and global programming. He oversees a team of seven editors, staff writers, and translators based in Ho Chi Minh City.
In November, Dao spearheads the relaunch of Vietcetera’s International Edition, which expands from a business-focused news blog to a first-of-its-kind publication investigating the global Vietnamese identity and engaging the 4.5 million-strong Vietnamese diaspora. The relaunch comes on the heels of Vietcetera’s successful Series A fundraise, which was finalized in September. In addition to new content, freelance contributors, and leadership, plans for Vietcetera International 2.0 include more US-based event programming and English-language podcasts in the near future.
“Vietcetera is the kind of publication I wish I had access to growing up — a forward-thinking digital platform speaking to young Vietnamese and diaspora Vietnamese millennials and Gen-Zers all over the world,” Dao says. “I’m honored to be working with this standout team to create dialogue that transcends borders and even language. Through Vietcetera International 2.0, we’re aiming to be the paper of record for both Vietnam and the global Vietnamese identity.”
Prior to joining Vietcetera, Dao was the deputy digital editor at Saveur Magazine and digital community & commercial editor at Time Out New York. His lifestyle, culture, and travel writing has appeared in dozens of leading publications including Vice, Paper, Food & Wine, Forbes, and Conde Nast Traveler. In 2018, he was named Young Drinks Writer of the Year by The Spirits Business; and in 2019, he was featured in a list of 50 rising stars in the beverage industry by WSET.
“I’ve known Dan for many years, and am thrilled to have him join the Vietcetera team as we lean further into our mission to connect Vietnam to the world,” Tran says. “Not only is Dan an established tastemaker in the travel, food, and spirits industries, he’s also a cultural commentator who has written extensively about Vietnam and the issues facing the Vietnamese diaspora. We’re keen for him to continue this work here at Vietcetera’s International Edition.”
Beyond his editorial expertise, Dao also brings to the table a vast experience in digital strategy and audience development. His current and past roles include: PR director at pioneering Vietnamese coffee roaster Nguyen Coffee Supply, creative director at critically-acclaimed Vietnamese restaurant group Madame Vo, and founding partner of District One — a full-service digital marketing boutique with a specialty in building Asian and Vietnamese-owned brands.
