Two of Vietnam’s charming beach destinations were among the most popular beaches on TikTok in terms of hashtag use, according to a recent study by the UK luxury holiday company Destination2. The round-up was ranked based on the number of views from TikTok videos.

The beaches in Nha Trang and Vung Tau came third and fourth on the list, respectively. Nha Trang accumulated 64.6 million views, while Vung Tau has 61.9 million views and counting.

Gone are the days when planning a vacation requires hours of research and minutes of calls just to make sure expectations meet reality. While TikTok is known for its viral dance videos and pop music, the younger generations use the video app as a search engine. And while Google remains the world’s most popular and used system for web searches, Google acknowledges TikTok’s powerful algorithm.

The TikTok algorithm is a recommendation system that determines the videos you see on your app. And since most brands are on TikTok now — from hole-in-the-wall restaurants to 5-star island resorts — a simple search on the video platform using the keywords such as ‘vacation’ or ‘beach’ can lead you to thousands of suggestions.

If you’re one of the 100 million domestic travelers or 3 million foreign visitors who were in the country this year, used TikTok and posted clips using the hashtags #VungTauBeach and #NhaTrangBeach.

In this case, Vietnam’s Nha Trang and Vung Tau surpassed US’s Waikiki Beach (5th) and Santa Monica (8th), as well as Australia’s Airlie Beach (9th) and Whitehaven Beach )10th).

Bondi Beach in Australia came in first with 445.8 million views, and Pattaya Beach in Thailand followed with 128.5 million views. Dubai’s JBR beach came in 6th, and Indonesia’s Kelingking Beach at the 7th spot with 30 million views.

In Vietnam, about 40.8% of the total population, or 39.91 million, are on TikTok, according to the data from ByteDance advertising released in September 2022.

Nha Trang is Vietnam's most famous seaside resort town and the scuba diving center of the country. Compared to other beach destinations like Phu Quoc and Mui Ne, Nha Trang is more lively and urban in character. “The poetic turquoise beach right in the heart of the bustling city makes Nha Trang beach special and popular among both the locals and tourists,” reads the report from CNBC.

From Ho Chi Minh City, you can book an hour-long plane ride to Nha Trang or take the slower journey by bus or train. However, if you’re already in HCMC, you shouldn’t miss a trip to Vung Tau for a quick beach trip.

The next time you plan a trip somewhere, regardless of how remote or luxurious the place is, TikTok’s search algorithm can help you achieve your dream destination.
