Beyond The Damage: Stories Of Humanity During Typhoon Yagi

On September 7, 2024, typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam, causing extensive destruction throughout the region, especially in Hanoi and the surrounding provinces.
The typhoon brought torrential rain and winds reaching up to 92 miles per hour, leading to severe flooding and landslides. By September 9, there had been at least 82 deaths and numerous injuries and missing persons in Vietnam. In Hanoi, several districts were submerged under floodwaters, and thousands of homes were destroyed.
Along with that, numerous stories of solidarity and acts of kindness were viral on social media, showcasing the enduring tradition of mutual support during times of hardship among Vietnamese people.
Families in areas affected by Yagi welcome dozens of homeless people to their apartments to take shelter. They do not only provide food and drinks but also blankets and clothes.
Strong winds hamper motorcyclists from moving easily and even risk their lives. Among that, images of cars and buses blocking the wind for motorbikes were widely spread on social media.
Local and functional forces both join to support cleaning post-typhoon consequences and together overcoming difficulties posing to residents.
As Typhoon Yagi made landfall, Vietnamese citizens used Facebook and Zalo to share information, coordinate rescue efforts, and raise funds for those affected. Hashtags such as #SaveVietnam and #TyphoonYagiRescue trended across social media, amplifying calls for help and connecting those in need with volunteers and resources.
Social media also played a key role in raising awareness about the storm's impact beyond Vietnam's borders. International organizations and charities were able to respond more effectively to the disaster, thanks to the widespread sharing of information and images from the ground.
