Over the past two decades, digital transformation has reshaped how businesses operate, as paper records have been replaced by electronic data, cash has gradually given way to digital payments, and management activities have moved onto centralized platforms. However, the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is taking the economy into its next phase: a shift from digital transformation to knowledge-based transformation.

While traditional software primarily helps record what has already happened, AI can help identify what is happening, forecast what is likely to happen next, and recommend options worth considering. AI is gradually becoming a new layer of intellectual infrastructure, a form of capability embedded into an organization’s everyday operations.

AI Does Not Replace Humans, It Restructures Work

A report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) indicates that approximately one-quarter of jobs worldwide have some degree of exposure to generative AI. However, the most common impact is not the complete disappearance of occupations, but rather a transformation in the nature of work itself.

The labor market is beginning to take shape around three distinct groups: highly automatable tasks such as data entry and document classification; occupations augmented by AI, including engineers, accountants, and managers; and entirely new roles focused on governance, auditing, and designing workflows for human-machine collaboration.

In modern enterprises, the actual capability of each position is increasingly shaped by three elements: human capability, AI capability, and enterprise data. Employees can now manage a team of specialized AI assistants for tasks ranging from research and data analysis to sales and operations.

However, AI remains fundamentally a decision-support system and cannot replace direct human accountability for management decisions.

While traditional software primarily helps record what has already happened, AI can help humans understand what is happening, forecast what is likely to happen next, and recommend options worth considering.

From Passive Software To Proactive AI Agents

Traditional software operates through a passive and linear process: humans enter data, computers process it, humans review the reports, and only then are final decisions made.

AI agent systems, by contrast, can proactively monitor data flows, automatically detect issues, analyze root causes, recommend solutions, and request approval before taking action within their authorized scope.

In retail, for example, an AI agent can detect the risk of stock shortages, forecast market demand, calculate replenishment quantities, compare quotations from multiple suppliers, and prepare documentation for management approval.

The transition toward agentic systems, therefore, is not merely a question of technical infrastructure. It also requires a fundamental redesign of how authority is governed and accountability is assigned.

To ensure safety and transparency in operations, AI agents can be categorized into four progressively higher levels of delegated authority:

  • Level 1 – Advisory: AI searches, compares, and recommends options, while humans execute the transaction themselves.
  • Level 2 – Assisted Transaction: AI prepares the shopping cart or transaction documentation, but the transaction is only executed after explicit human confirmation.
  • Level 3 – Limited Autonomy: AI is authorized to automatically execute transactions within predefined limits and conditions.
  • Level 4 – Authorized Autonomous Transaction: AI autonomously manages the entire sequence of complex transactions based on pre-approved policies.

Regardless of how far delegated authority expands, during the early stages of the agentic era, the core operating principle should remain: AI recommends, human confirms.

The Shift Toward Agentic Commerce (A-Commerce)

For more than two decades, e-commerce has placed much of the operational burden on users, requiring them to search for products, read descriptions, compare prices, and complete payment steps themselves.

The emergence of Agentic Commerce, or A-Commerce, is beginning to reshape this experience, with AI assistants acting on behalf of both buyers and sellers to facilitate transactions.

On the buyer side, individuals can have personal AI assistants that understand their budgets, preferences, technical requirements, and purchase histories, helping them pursue specific goals. Commercial interactions can therefore shift from “searching by keyword” to “expressing intent.”

On the seller side, businesses can integrate AI agents directly into inventory systems, pricing policies, promotional programs, and logistics services.

Corporate websites will not disappear, but their role will change significantly. In addition to human-facing interfaces, businesses will need to develop structured, machine-readable data interfaces such as Product APIs, Pricing APIs, Inventory APIs, and Payment APIs.

The growing involvement of intelligent agents is also pushing marketing away from the Attention Economy and toward a Trust & Relevance Economy.

A strong brand in the AI era is not simply one that people remember. It must also provide trustworthy information, transparent policies, verifiable quality, and secure transaction infrastructure.

Education, The Digital Divide, And Trust

The rapid rise of AI is creating entirely new challenges for education and social governance.

When information can be synthesized within seconds, education systems must shift their focus away from memorizing knowledge and toward developing critical thinking, problem-formulation skills, information verification, ethical awareness, and the ability to collaborate with machines.

Expanding AI literacy is becoming increasingly urgent to prevent the emergence of a new digital divide — one separating individuals and businesses capable of effectively leveraging AI from those being left behind.

At the same time, maintaining trust in digital environments requires AI systems to be reinforced with multiple layers of safety mechanisms. Digital identity, granular access controls, transaction limits, audit logs, and immediate human intervention mechanisms are essential safeguards against identity impersonation, unauthorized actions, and the misuse of personal data.
