Inside One Of The World’s Top Schools: What Defines Educational Excellence Today?

In an era when artificial intelligence is reshaping every profession, parents expect education to deliver both outstanding academic achievement and equip young people with the adaptability and resilience needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
For nearly 200 years, King’s College School Wimbledon (King’s), one of the UK’s and the world’s leading schools, has cultivated educational excellence precisely through this approach. Today, that same King’s excellence has arrived in Ho Chi Minh City.
What underpins nearly 200 years of King’s excellence?
King’s has earned its formidable reputation through consistently exceptional academic excellence that significantly outperforms national averages in the UK. Approximately 98% of pupils achieved grade 9–7 at GCSE/IGCSE, compared to a UK national average of around 20–25%. At A Level, roughly half of all pupils secure A* grades. Each year, 25% of leavers win places at Oxbridge or Ivy League universities, while 97% progress to leading global institutions.
These outstanding results are not achieved in isolation but reflect sustained academic outcomes passed down through generations of pupils. This consistency has seen King’s regularly ranked among the very best schools in the UK and worldwide by prestige awards, including The Sunday Times Parent Power 2026 and the HSBC Hurun Global High Schools Ranking. Beyond academics, these rankings also assess teaching quality, learning environment, pastoral care, and the breadth of co-curricular opportunities.
Mind, Spirit and Heart: The philosophy driving excellence
We have always believed that academic achievement is a central pillar of education. However, we also recognise that in a world changing at unprecedented speed, academic success alone is not enough. Young people need more if they are truly to flourish in the future.
Dr Anne Cotton, Head of King’s College School Wimbledon, believes educational excellence cannot be measured by examination results alone. That is why King’s has built its philosophy on three pillars: Mind, Spirit and Heart.
In an age when AI can retrieve information in seconds, King’s focuses on cultivating irreplaceable human qualities: critical thinking, intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning (Mind); kindness, emotional intelligence and resilience in the face of adversity (Spirit); and the confidence and character developed through sport, the arts and pupil leadership (Heart).
This Mind, Spirit and Heart framework reflects a broader vision of success. King’s not only prepares pupils for entry to the world’s finest universities but also nurtures the personal qualities and skills that will serve them throughout life - from early adulthood and beyond.
Excellence in teaching, pastoral care and co-curricular life
A defining feature of King’s is the conviction that every pupil should be known, understood and supported as a unique individual. This belief underpins a robust pastoral care system that is integral to daily school life.
From the moment a child joins the school, they become a member of a House, a small, supportive community in which they build friendships, learn to help others and develop a strong sense of belonging. Each pupil is guided by dedicated form tutors, House leaders and wellbeing specialists who closely monitor and support their academic, emotional and social development.
Additional provision includes confidential counselling services, personal development programmes, mental health initiatives and community-building activities that foster a culture of care and mutual support.
Co-curricular activities are equally central to the King’s experience. From debating, music and drama to sport, entrepreneurship, community service and international exchanges, pupils are encouraged to explore diverse interests, discover their passions and develop collaboration and leadership skills.
Bringing Nearly 200 Years Of Educational Excellence To Ho Chi Minh City
In partnership with Millennia Education, King’s College School Wimbledon is establishing King’s College Wimbledon Ho Chi Minh City (King’s HCMC), for pupils aged 2–18. The first academic year is scheduled to begin in August 2027 at The Global City.
Dr Anne Cotton has affirmed that “King’s College Wimbledon Ho Chi Minh City will be built upon the same values and standards of excellence that have defined King’s Wimbledon in the UK”
Direct oversight from the UK
King’s College School Wimbledon will maintain direct involvement in curriculum, quality assurance, regular evaluations and academic monitoring. The school’s governing and educational leadership in Ho Chi Minh City will include British representation.
All teachers at King’s HCMC will be recruited and trained to the same global standards applied at the UK school. Subject leaders from Wimbledon will work closely with the team in Ho Chi Minh City to ensure fidelity to the King’s approach.
Part of a growing global network
King’s HCMC forms part of the expanding King’s family of schools across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Pupils in Ho Chi Minh City will benefit from exchange programmes, joint academic projects and collaborative activities with other King’s schools, becoming part of a wider international learning community.
