What Mesdames Thanh Sắc (Madame In Saigon) Says About Vietnamese Cinema Going Global

For years, Vietnamese films reaching international audiences have largely relied on film festivals, streaming platforms, and word of mouth. Wide theatrical releases beyond Vietnam have remained relatively uncommon. That is beginning to shift.

Following its theatrical debut in Vietnam in June, Mesdames Thanh Sắc will arrive in North American cinemas under the title Madame in Saigon. The release is a partnership between Ho Chi Minh City-based production studio Live On and independent distributor Reel Citrus. The film will premiere in Los Angeles on August 26 before opening in theaters across North America on August 28.

Rather than approaching the release as a standalone screening, the campaign points to a broader change in how Vietnamese films are being introduced abroad, through community partnerships, creator-led promotion, and cultural programming designed with diaspora audiences in mind.

A Story Set In 1960s Saigon

Directed by Thắng Vũ, Madame in Saigon unfolds against the nightlife of 1960s Saigon.

The film follows Cầm Thanh, played by Thanh Hằng, a young dancer whose rise through the city’s entertainment scene draws her into a power struggle with Madame Sắc, played by Hồng Ánh, the influential owner of the Kim Đô nightclub. The cast also includes Lương Thế Thành and singer-actress Văn Mai Hương.

Framed as a period drama, the film explores ambition, class, love, and female agency within a rapidly changing urban Vietnam.

More Than A Theatrical Release

For Reel Citrus, Madame in Saigon is more than the next title on its distribution slate.

Founded in 2025, the company focuses on bringing Asian and diaspora cinema to North American theaters through campaigns that extend beyond traditional advertising. Reel Citrus works with Vietnamese Student Associations, cultural organizations, independent creators, community media, and local businesses to build conversations around each release.

“Our job is to build the audience around the film, to make sure our communities see themselves on screen and show up for each other,” said Brittany Tran, Executive Director of Reel Citrus.

The approach reflects a broader strategy among independent distributors, where a theatrical release can also become a shared cultural moment, particularly for audiences whose stories remain underrepresented on mainstream screens.

Thanh Hằng Joins The North American Release

Thanh Hằng will attend the film’s red-carpet premiere in Los Angeles before taking part in press activities in Orange County.

Known first as one of Vietnam’s most prominent supermodels, she later established herself as a leading actress, with credits including Mẹ Chồng (Mother-in-Law) and Những Cô Gái Chân Dài. Her presence brings added visibility to a campaign aimed at Vietnamese audiences overseas as well as wider multicultural communities interested in Asian cinema.

Vietnamese Stories Continue To Travel

The release also marks Live On’s first collaboration in the United States and its debut in the North American theatrical market.

For the Ho Chi Minh City-based studio, the partnership offers an opportunity to bring Vietnamese stories to new audiences while building longer-term relationships across markets.

As more independent distributors invest in community-led releases, Vietnamese cinema is finding new ways to travel. That journey now depends not only on subtitles or festival recognition, but also on audiences maintaining cultural connections across borders.

Whether Madame in Saigon becomes a commercial success in North America remains to be seen. Still, its release reflects a wider shift: Vietnamese films are increasingly entering overseas markets with clearer distribution strategies, stronger community networks, and a more deliberate understanding of the audiences they hope to reach.
