How many reasons does it take to return to a city?

The initial awe of a scenic landscape eventually fades. Hospitality, however warm, is rarely enough on its own. The weather is fickle, shifting with the seasons. Ultimately, what anchors us most profoundly to a place are the memories encoded in our sense of taste.

Research shows that the perceived value of a culinary experience is deeply intertwined with a destination’s image and a traveler’s intent to return. In Vietnam, an empirical study of 526 tourists shares this conclusion:

Positive experiences with local food can shape how travelers perceive a region’s culture, while a strong culinary identity can become a powerful draw, bringing them back to the same destination time and again.

That was our core criteria when searching for the rightful winner of The Discover Awards at the 2026 Flavors Awards. This year, that honor goes to Kỷ Vật, a restaurant steeped in contemporary heritage, tucked away on Lê Hồng Phong Street in Da Nang.

A Perfectly Timed Debut

To decode Kỷ Vật’s magnetism, one must first look at its timing.

The restaurant arrived at a historic milestone. In 2026, the merging of Quang Nam province into Da Nang transformed the city into Vietnam's largest centrally governed municipality - expanding its footprint ninefold and enveloping three UNESCO World Heritage sites.

This monumental shift triggered a tourism boom, and the data speaks volumes. In just the first half of 2026, Da Nang’s hospitality sector hosted nearly 9.8 million visitors (a 22.5% increase). Crucially, international arrivals hit a record-breaking 5.2 million (up 28.7%), eclipsing domestic tourism for the very first time. By May of that same year, revenue from lodging and dining had surged by 27.5%.

Amidst this year-round influx of global travelers, Kỷ Vật has emerged as an internationally minded haven that remains fiercely rooted in its local identity. Presenting its menu in five languages is far more than a testament to polished service. It is a bold declaration of hospitality from a homegrown establishment with its sights set on a global standard.

Furthermore, its seamless resto-bar model addresses a common challenge in local tourism: extending the guest experience from lunch straight through to dinner - setting the perfect stage for intimate conversations over cocktails.

The name itself sets the intention. Translating to “keepsake” in English, it evokes a small object exchanged to preserve the memory of a person, a place, or a special milestone. Yet, the namesake here isn’t about precious antiques displayed on a shelf. Instead, the space, the experience, and the flavors themselves coalesce into a living memento - something Da Nang sends home with travelers as part of the memories they carry with them.

Adapting Without Dilution

As a city transforms into a major tourism hub, its culinary landscape inevitably arrives at a crossroads:

Should it preserve what has always been there, or evolve to meet the tastes of a new generation of diners?

Culinary tourism has always been anchored in this very paradox. We seek out something new to satisfy our curiosity, yet it must feel familiar and authentic enough to convince us that we are genuinely tasting the soul of the region.

In a recent magazine interview, Kỷ Vật’s Executive Chef Tuấn shared his ethos: “The dishes carry the bold essence of the ocean - unexpected in places, yet unmistakably Vietnamese.” Kỷ Vật is an expression of his vision - steeped in childhood memories, refined through techniques honed in five-star kitchens, and finished with subtle creative touches. This departure from tradition is never about showing off. Instead, it follows an unwavering philosophy: no matter how innovative or imaginative the cooking techniques may be, a truly meaningful dish must ultimately return to, and serve, a memory.

That is why we often compare the culinary creativity at Kỷ Vật to an ancient tree. Its canopy may reach high to catch the most modern currents of global gastronomy, but its roots must run deep into the native soil of local culture. New, but never unrooted. Open to the world, but never diluted.

If all this hasn’t convinced you, just look at how the food tells a story.

Take the Bún bò Huế, for instance - a familiar dish for locals and a must-try for tourists. Instead of playing it safe with the usual beef bone and lemongrass broth, Kỷ Vật takes a risk by using a French-style lobster bisque as the base. The deep, strong flavor of fermented shrimp paste and the signature Central Vietnamese spice are perfectly wrapped in the rich sweetness of the bisque. You immediately taste the luxury of Western cooking, but the aftertaste is entirely the soul of a classic bowl of Bún bò.

Or consider the coconut-mango dessert. At its heart is a bánh bò with a honeycomb-like crumb, the kind of rustic cake once found at a neighborhood market stall, reimagined here in a more refined form and served with salted coconut ice cream, rich pandan sauce, and slices of juicy ripe mango. It does more than bring a meal to a close. It is a return ticket to the sweet, slow summer afternoons of childhood.

Bridging The Culinary Divide

The final - and perhaps the biggest factor in Kỷ Vật winning The Discover Award - is how it solves a real problem in Da Nang’s current F&B scene.

If you look closely, the city’s dining landscape has mostly been split into two extremes. On one side, you have the massive, open-air seafood joints and casual dining spots. They are built for big crowds, but often lack a real brand story. On the other side are the fine dining restaurants tucked away inside expensive five-star resorts. They offer standard luxury, but they are completely cut off from the lively, daily heartbeat of the city center.

What we really needed was that missing puzzle piece: Contemporary Heritage Dining.

Modern travelers and savvy locals alike seem to be looking for more than just a place to get full or eat somewhere fancy. What they’re really after is a multisensory cultural experience. They want a space that is polished, thoughtfully designed, and visually striking, yet still breathes the same air as the city outside. A place where local ingredients are celebrated through a modern lens. The arrival of concepts like Kỷ Vật is, fittingly, the perfect answer to this shift.

What made the Flavor Awards editors ultimately choose Kỷ Vật wasn’t some flashy marketing campaign. A new restaurant might catch a lucky break or ride a passing trend, but the ability to maintain those high standards on every return visit is the true measure of a brand’s success.

Kỷ Vật has proven it’s no flash in the pan. It has given us fresh inspiration to write about this city, marking the beginning of a lasting culinary movement along the Central Coast.

And ultimately, when people wonder why they keep coming back to a city, the answer is sometimes perfectly simple. It’s because right there, a beautiful, delicious “keepsake” is waiting for them to return and taste it all over again.
