Negroni Week Vietnam: A Drink For Your Cause

The summer afternoon drink of choice turns 100 years old this year. The Negroni, the most delicious of bitter cocktails, is being celebrated this June during Negroni Week from the 24th to the 30th of June, when bars and restaurants all over Vietnam will be mixing Negronis and variations of the bitter cocktail for charity. Started at the global level by Imbibe Magazine and Campari, Negroni Week will see its first ever edition in Vietnam this year. This year will also see a special guest bartender, Campari’s Southeast Asia Brand Ambassador Symphony Loo, kicking off the week.

By drinking a Negroni at a participating venue during Negroni Week, a portion of the proceeds will go toward the Surfrider Foundation, which is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches through a powerful network.

So what’s the story behind the Negroni? What makes a Negroni?

Invented in 1919 by Count Camillo Negroni in Florence, Italy, the Negroni is a variation on another classic cocktail, the Americano. A mixture of Campari, sweet vermouth and soda water, served with a lemon slice, the Americano found its name as it became a favorite of Americans on holiday while in Italy. But it was 100 years ago when Count Camillo Negroni asked his bartender at the Cassoni Cafe in Florence to add another kick to his Americano by replacing the soda with gin. History also shows another Italian bartender replacing the lemon peel with an orange slice. And so today, the ingredients of a Negroni, one of Italy’s most famous imports, is comprised of one part gin, one part vermouth rosso (red, semi-sweet), and one part Campari, garnished with orange peel.
