More travelers are looking beyond sightseeing and seeking experiences that bring them closer to the culture and heritage of a place. According to Market Reports World, more than 55% of travelers worldwide now prioritize heritage-related trips, with around 68% taking part in festivals, arts events or traditional cultural experiences at least once a year. And as the appetite for more meaningful travel continues to grow, this trend shows no sign of slowing down.

So, if you’re spending the five-day National Day holiday in Vietnam and looking for a quick escape - and your ideal getaway needs to check all the boxes below:

  • Soak up the festive atmosphere.
  • Recharge after months of hard work.
  • Feel like a proper getaway, while still having meaningful cultural experiences.

…consider this your shortlist.

1. Hue-Phong Nha: A Train Journey Through Heritage

In recent years, Vietnam’s railway network seems to be rediscovering some of its old momentum. In the first six months of 2026 alone, nearly 3.9 million passengers traveled by rail. But trains today are becoming more than just a way to get from one place to another. Many routes are being reimagined as journeys that connect travelers with the culture, history and identity of the destinations they pass through - moving from the awe of natural wonders to a deeper appreciation of the country’s history and heritage.

One such example is the HQ1/HQ2 train pair, aptly named “A Journey Through Wonders - World Heritage.” Launched by Vietnam Railways on August 29, just ahead of the National Day holiday, the service takes travelers from the former imperial capital of Hue to Phong Nha in Quang Tri. The roughly 190-kilometer journey takes around four hours.

At one end of the journey is Hue, a cultural hub known for its rich heritage, festivals, imperial arts, cuisine and enduring traditions. At the other is Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its vast cave systems, primeval forests and remarkable geological and geomorphological formations.

The stations along the route are destinations in their own right, offering access to sites such as the Complex of Hue Monuments, the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel via Dong Ha Station, and the Vinh Moc Tunnels via My Trach Station. The railway also plans to introduce and sell OCOP products at the stations, giving travelers another way to discover local specialties along the journey.

Details:

  • Distance: 190km.
  • Journey time: Approximately 4 hours.
  • Ticket price: During the inaugural week from August 29 to September 5, 2026, Vietnam Railways will offer a 50% discount across all ticket classes. Experience fares for the Hue-Phong Nha (Tho Loc Station) route will range from VND 210,000 to VND 380,000.

Similar heritage-focused experiences are also available on other routes, including “Central Vietnam Heritage Connection” (Hue-Da Nang), “Red Flamboyant” (Hanoi-Hai Phong), and “Hanoi’s Five City Gates - The Hanoi Train” (Hanoi-Bac Ninh).

2. Moc Chau: Week Of Culture And Travel

If you're based in a major city and have had your fill of traffic jams, smog and relentless honking, Moc Chau offers a chance to slow down and immerse yourself in the rhythms of Vietnam's Northwest highlands. Located in Son La Province, this highland district is known for its cool climate, rolling landscapes and distinctive local culture.

From August 27 to September 5, Moc Chau will come alive for the Moc Chau Culture and Tourism Week 2026, held at Moc Chau National Tourism Area. The celebration offers travelers a chance to experience Son La through its landscapes, traditions and communities, with a program of activities celebrating local heritage while marking Vietnam Tourism Year 2026.

The highlight of the week is the Son La International Brocade Night 2026, themed “Weaving Heritage, Blending Colors,” taking place on the evening of August 31 at May 8 Square in Moc Chau Ward. Through artistic performances and brocade fashion showcases, the event will bring the patterns, materials and cultural stories of local ethnic communities to the stage, creating a meeting point between tradition and contemporary expression.

On the evening of September 1, the “Moc Chau - A Call to Love” art program will take over the square, culminating in a 10-minute fireworks display - just enough sparkle to cap off a highland escape before the holiday comes to an end.

3. Quang Ninh: Carry The National Flag To Dong Pagoda For The Vietnam’s National Day Sunrise

To mark the 81st anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day, a community of trekking enthusiasts and Yên Tử devotees will come together for “Proud of Vietnam – Continuing the Heritage,” a journey that will bring at least 810 participants, each carrying the national flag, to the sacred summit of Yên Tử in the early hours of September 2, 2026.

The journey will begin at 1 a.m. on September 2 at Trúc Lâm Yên Tử, in Yên Tử Ward, Quang Ninh Province. The group will hike uphill to Dong Pagoda, where a flag-raising ceremony and the singing of the Vietnamese National Anthem will take place at the summit at 6 a.m.

The program will continue with a commemorative address reflecting on the 81-year history of Vietnam’s National Day, followed by a ceremony honoring fallen heroes and paying tribute to generations who came before. After taking group photos with the national flag, participants will make their way back down the mountain and join a cultural performance program near the statue of Emperor-Trần Nhân Tông.

4. Hoi An Memories Show

The final experience on this list is Hoi An Memories, a show that is likely already familiar to travelers seeking the old-world charm, artistry and cultural stories of the ancient town. Once described by Reuters as a “global phenomenon”, the production also holds Vietnamese Guinness World Records for the largest outdoor stage and the largest cast. Through live performance, music, lighting and choreography, Hoi An Memories traces the history and cultural heritage of Hoi An, bringing the everyday lives and traditions of its people to life across the passage of time.

For this year’s National Day holiday, Hoi An Memories will present a special edition titled “Conical Hat Flag”, blending the iconic Vietnamese nón lá with the red of the national flag to create a performance that feels both familiar and fresh. The edition previously drew attention during this year’s April 30 holiday, welcoming around 12,000 spectators.

Conclusion

Five days may not be enough to truly slow down, fully recharge or uncover every layer of a new destination. But it is more than enough time to make a trip worth remembering.

Whichever route you choose, what you bring home from the holiday doesn’t have to be limited to picture-perfect moments for your feed. It can also be the stories you hear, the colors you encounter and the new experiences that reveal a side of Vietnam that may feel familiar, yet still has plenty left to discover.

Still wondering where to go? Pick a destination, pack your bags and set off. The holiday is just around the corner.
