Innovate Beyond Boundaries is a four-part leadership series highlighting NAB’s spirit of innovation through the stories of its leaders, while offering a closer look at the people, culture, and engineering mindset behind the organisation.

After studying and building her early career in Australia, Uyen Nguyen returned to Vietnam with both personal and professional ambitions. Her journey from a software engineer to Head of Engineering – Enterprise Technology at NAB Vietnam reflects a broader shift in how Vietnamese technology talent can grow, lead, and contribute to global organisations.

After completing her Software Engineering degree at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Uyen started her career as a software engineer before gradually taking on broader responsibilities across technical leadership and engineering management roles.

When she returned to Vietnam, she saw an opportunity to contribute to a growing technology ecosystem while staying closer to her family. That path eventually brought her to NAB Vietnam, where she joined as an Engineering Manager before moving into her current role as Head of Engineering – Enterprise Technology.
As the second episode of Innovate Beyond Boundaries, Uyen shares how NAB Vietnam is developing engineering capabilities, building a culture of ownership, and creating opportunities for local talent to contribute to technology solutions that support a global banking organisation.

From Software Engineer To Engineering Leader

For Uyen, her career journey has always been shaped by continuous learning. More than 15 years ago, she started as a software engineering student in Australia before entering the technology industry. Over time, she moved from writing software to leading teams, managing engineering capabilities, and eventually taking on broader responsibilities as a technology leader.

When she joined NAB Vietnam, she started as an Engineering Manager and built her team from the ground up. Her early team became among the first engineering groups in Vietnam to take ownership of NAB’s technology services and applications.

Today, as Head of Engineering – Enterprise Technology, Uyen leads multiple teams responsible for building and managing core cloud infrastructure that supports NAB’s technology ecosystem. For her, the biggest shift has been moving from simply delivering technology solutions to owning the entire journey.

Our teams here own the outcomes. We design the architecture, implement and build the solution, test it, deploy it, and maintain it as well.

This end-to-end ownership has become a defining part of how engineering teams operate at NAB Vietnam.

Building Technology Through Ownership

A key part of NAB Vietnam’s engineering culture is creating an environment where people can take ownership of the solutions they build. Rather than focusing only on completing assigned tasks, engineers are encouraged to understand the challenges behind each problem, contribute ideas, and make decisions throughout the development process.

For Uyen, ownership is not only about technical responsibility. It is also about confidence. When engineers have the opportunity to contribute, experiment, and learn from challenges, they become more proactive and capable of solving increasingly complex problems. This mindset allows teams at NAB Vietnam to contribute to critical technology foundations that support the bank’s global operations.

Leadership Starts With Growing Together

For Uyen, leadership is not about standing above the team. It is about working alongside them. Her approach focuses on staying close to the team’s daily experiences, understanding challenges from the ground, and building trust through collaboration.

I work very closely with my team to know what’s happening on the ground. As I work with them through challenges and difficulties, I build trust with the team.

Rather than viewing leadership as a one-way relationship, Uyen believes growth happens in both directions. While she supports her teams through coaching and guidance, she also learns from the people around her. This creates an environment where everyone continues to improve together.

For Uyen, this approach becomes even more important as technology evolves rapidly and engineers are constantly adapting to new tools and ways of working.

AI As A Tool To Build Better, Not Simply Faster

Like many technology organisations, NAB has been exploring how artificial intelligence can support engineering teams. For Uyen, AI provides opportunities to improve productivity, help engineers learn new technologies, and accelerate development processes.

However, innovation must always be balanced with responsibility. As a highly regulated banking organisation, NAB places strong emphasis on security and risk management when adopting new technologies.

We don’t want to move at speed and take shortcuts because NAB is a bank and is highly regulated. We always put risk and security as our top priorities.

For engineering teams, this means using AI as a tool to enhance human capability while maintaining the standards required in financial services. The goal is not simply to work faster, but to create better solutions while ensuring trust and reliability.

Creating Global Technology From Vietnam

Having experienced both Australian and Vietnamese technology environments, Uyen believes strong global technology delivery comes from having consistent standards, systems, and expectations across locations. Whether an engineer works in Sydney, Melbourne, Ho Chi Minh City, or Hanoi, the foundation remains the same.

What differs is the perspective each market brings. According to Uyen, mature technology markets often focus on improving and scaling existing systems. Vietnam, meanwhile, brings a strong creation mindset, especially among younger engineers who are eager to explore new technologies and build new solutions.

Bringing these different perspectives together creates opportunities for innovation across the organisation. For Uyen, innovation is not limited to one location. It comes from people with different experiences working together toward a shared goal.

Investing In The Next Generation Of Engineers

For Uyen, building a strong technology organisation requires more than hiring talented people. It requires creating opportunities for people to grow. At NAB Vietnam, engineers have access to learning opportunities, coaching, mentorship, and career development pathways that help them continue expanding their skills.

Her own journey reflects this philosophy. Starting her career as a software engineer, Uyen gradually moved into leadership roles by taking on new challenges and continuously developing her capabilities. She believes the same opportunities should be available to the next generation of engineers entering the industry.

Through programmes such as StarCamp, WeCamp, and mentorship initiatives, NAB Vietnam supports graduates and early-career engineers as they develop their technical skills and explore long-term career paths.

Empowering Vietnamese Talent To Shape Global Technology

For Uyen, the future of technology is not defined by where teams are located. It is defined by their ability to create meaningful solutions, collaborate effectively, and continue growing. Her journey from studying software engineering in Australia to leading enterprise technology teams in Vietnam reflects a broader transformation within the technology industry.

Vietnamese engineers are increasingly moving beyond supporting global technology projects. They are becoming the people who design, build, and lead solutions that serve customers around the world. Through its investment in people, technology, and innovation, NAB Vietnam demonstrates how global banking technology can be built from Vietnam by empowering the engineers who create it.

Special thanks to NAB Vietnam for partnering with Vietnam Innovators to bring Innovate Beyond Boundaries to life. Through this four-episode series, NAB Vietnam shares a closer look at the people, ideas, and culture driving innovation at NAB, while showcasing Vietnam's growing role in building world-class technology for the global stage.
