Vietnam is becoming a popular place to live and work for foreigners due to its lower cost of living, growing economy, and tech-savvy population. Understanding the country's citizenship requirements is crucial for those looking to settle permanently in Vietnam.

However, it's worth noting that while it is possible for foreigners to obtain Vietnamese citizenship, the process can be challenging, and it rarely happens. The Vietnamese government carefully scrutinizes all applications for citizenship, and approval rates are low. Additionally, fulfilling the language requirement can be a significant barrier for many applicants, as Vietnamese can be challenging to learn.

But the benefits can be significant for those committed to making Vietnam their home. Having Vietnamese citizenship grants access to healthcare, education, and other social services, as well as the right to vote and participate in the country's political process. It's also an opportunity to deepen one's connection to Vietnam and its people and contribute to its growth and development.

Here’s what you need to know:

According to the Law on Vietnamese Nationality 2008 (Clause 1, Article 19), foreign citizens and stateless individuals who have been living in Vietnam for a significant amount of time may be eligible for Vietnamese citizenship. However, there are specific conditions that must be met to qualify.

Firstly, the applicant must have the full civil capacity as Vietnamese law prescribes. This means that they must be over the age of 18 and not have any legal issues or concerns that would prevent them from being granted citizenship. Secondly, they must comply with the Constitution and laws of Vietnam and respect the traditions, customs, and practices of the Vietnamese nation.

Thirdly, applicants must be able to speak enough Vietnamese to integrate into Vietnamese society. This language requirement ensures that individuals seeking citizenship can communicate and connect with the local community. The level of Vietnamese proficiency required is not specified in the law, but applicants may be required to pass a language test to demonstrate their abilities.

Fourth, applicants must have permanently resided in Vietnam for five years or more up to the time of applying for Vietnamese citizenship. This requirement aims to ensure that the individual has a genuine connection to Vietnam and is committed to being a part of the community.

Lastly, applicants must be capable of ensuring their life in Vietnam. This means that they must be able to support themselves financially and contribute to the country's development.

However, there are exceptions to these requirements. If the applicant falls into one of the following categories, they may be naturalized in Vietnam without having to satisfy conditions 3, 4, and 5:

  • Being the spouse, natural father, natural mother, or natural child of a Vietnamese citizen;
  • Having special merits for contributing to the cause of construction and defense of the Vietnamese Fatherland;
  • Being beneficial to the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Those who acquire Vietnamese citizenship must renounce their foreign nationality unless the State President specifically exempts them. Additionally, the person applying for citizenship must choose a Vietnamese name that will be stated in the decision for naturalization in the country.

It's important to note that the government is responsible for specifying the conditions for obtaining Vietnamese citizenship. This means that the rules may change, and it's essential to keep up to date with any updates or changes in the law.

Foreign citizens and stateless individuals can apply for Vietnamese citizenship if they meet the above requirements. It's important to understand the language requirement and the exceptions and additional conditions for acquiring citizenship. If you're considering applying for Vietnamese citizenship, it's recommended that you consult with a legal expert or immigration specialist for guidance on the process.
