"Mezcalitas" have become a global trend, and for good reason. The exotic, sweet flavor of 100% agave mezcal has won over palates worldwide, particularly among those who appreciate the distinctive smoky notes of the spirit. Now, the good news for local connoisseurs is that Mezcales Casa Armando, a Mexican company producing some of the world’s finest mezcals, is officially available in Vietnam.
Its portfolio includes the El Recuerdo, Zignum, and Señorío Mezcal lines. Together, they have earned more than 173 international awards, including the prestigious title of Best Agave Producer in the World at the 2022 International Wines & Spirits Competition (IWSC) in London.
Authentic Mexican Heritage
Mezcal is a distilled spirit crafted from the maguey plant (agave). While regulations allow for 14 different agave types, most of which are wild, Casa Armando’s distillery in Oaxaca exclusively uses 100% Espadín agave. This variety requires six to eight years to mature. During this time, some plants are colonized by worms—often considered pests, yet highly valued in tradition. These are harvested to be added to spirits or to produce the famous worm salt (sal de gusano).
This practice has sparked urban legends about daring to "drink the worm," but beyond the myth, it remains a significant part of Mezcal’s heritage. The production is strictly regulated by the Mezcal Regulatory Council to ensure the Denomination of Origin (DO) seal.
Whether enjoyed in small sips from a traditional "veladora" (candle glass) with orange and worm salt, or in cocktails, the brand offers distinct experiences:
- Recuerdo Line: Ideal for cocktails with a medium smokiness.
- Señorío Mezcal Ultra-Premium Line: Known as "The Lord of Mezcals," this line represents the perfect harmony of double distillation. It offers an extraordinarily smooth profile, balancing subtle smoky notes with the flavor of Espadín agave.
Sustainability At The Core
At Mezcales Casa Armando, sustainability is not an afterthought; it is central to their mission through the MÉTODO VERDE Sustainability Program. The company is dedicated to preserving the region's environment and supporting rural communities.
- Field & Farming: In their greenhouses, they plant agave seeds to ensure healthy crops. These seeds are also distributed to local farmers, who grow their own agave and sell the harvest back to the company, supporting the local economy.
- Production: Stone ovens fueled by certified wood are used for cooking, and shredders are employed for milling, ensuring no animals (like horses or donkeys) are exploited.
- Eco-Efficiency: The distillery operates its own wastewater treatment plant, harvests rainwater, and uses solar panels to meet energy needs.
- Certifications: The brand holds Kosher certification.
By promoting the talent of local artisans and improving quality of life in rural areas, Casa Armando continues to showcase Oaxaca’s culture on the world stage.
Señorío Mezcal Lab Vietnam Finals 2025
To celebrate this rich history locally, LGI Indochina and Señorío Mezcal recently hosted the Señorío Mezcal Lab Vietnam Finals 2025 on November 11. This international initiative challenges bartenders to create signature cocktails featuring local ingredients, honoring the craftsmanship of both Mexico and Vietnam.
Thananaya Samoema (Jib) from Firkin Bar was crowned the Champion. She captivated the judges—Host Dustin Phuc Nguyen, The Vinh, and Thien Dat—with her creation, MVP (Mexican + Vietnamese + Phở). Inspired by her first phở experience, the cocktail blends the smoky depth of Señorío Mezcal Joven with sugarcane, kumquat, and phở-spiced molasses for a bright, cross-cultural harmony.
Runners-up included:
2nd Place: Ngô Quốc Huy (STIR Modern Classic Cocktail Bar) with “Sorbo de Memoria.”
3rd Place: Johnnie (Dot Bar) with “Corazón del Mekong.
