DEDON: Elevating Outdoor Furniture & Bringing It To The World

It was a technological innovation that gave DEDON its head start, but respect for artisanship made it a world leader in outdoor furniture.

Outdoor furniture brand DEDON had an advantage right from its inception a little over thirty years ago. They were the very first company to roll out woven outdoor furniture, made possible by a highly durable synthetic fiber they developed at their German headquarters. It may seem a small development at first, but it’s this technology that rendered their furniture resistant to sun, rain, frost, and seawater. In effect, it allowed them to focus on beautiful designs that can match the aesthetic appeal of indoor furniture, without concern for wear and tear.

Since then, DEDON has grown into the world leader in its field. Products are designed by award-winning designers, then hand-woven by braiding artists in Southeast Asia, and quality controlled to German production standards, before being distributed in over 100 countries on six continents around the world, including right here in Vietnam.

An International Circular Economy

Though DEDON was founded in Germany, by former professional soccer player Bobby Dekeyser, it’s undoubtedly a global brand. The company remains headquartered in Germany, where they can maintain EU regulated production standards, while there are subsidiaries in the US, offices in Hong Kong, and over 1,000 employees, agents, and contract partners in more than 100 countries around the world.

One of the most important characteristics of DEDON’s work is the handwoven element. The founders had developed the materials they needed to make resilient, aesthetically pleasing outdoor furniture. Now, they just needed talented hands to weave their products. Their search for the best weavers they could find ended on Cebu Island. And thus another DEDON international outpost was born.

As for the designs themselves, the company has always sought to work with the best and most creative minds they can – no matter where in the world they are. Young up and coming stars have made their name with DEDON, while eminent industry names such as Jean-Marie Massaud, Henrik Pedersen, Frank Ligthart, Sebastian Herkner, Steven Burks, and Toan Nguyen, have all been commissioned to produce collections for the company. Indeed, some of these collections have gained international acclaim, winning awards such as Interiors Magazine’s “Best of The Best” and “Best of The Year, as well as at the prestigious ICONIC AWARDS.

Iconic Creations Inspired By The Natural World

While artfulness is always on the agenda, functionality is just as important. After all, furniture is created to be used and to last. The many DEDON collections boast a great array of outdoor couches, beach chairs, dining and side tables, and lighting accessories – anything to make a garden, patio, balcony, or poolside more liveable.

Imagination has never been in short supply though, as evidenced by some of DEDON’s more iconic creations – items of furniture that we now automatically associate with relaxed chic lifestyles like hanging loungers, swingsets, and loveseats, all rendered as robust as they are eye-catching by the invention of DEDON’s hard-wearing synthetic fiber. These have been a fixture of DEDON’s work for years, bringing an international company back to its human roots by offering shelter, comfort, and protection.

The sense of place these pieces warrant is evident in the brand’s latest collection “Spirit of Place,” Heavily inspired by the natural world – sunsets, waterfalls, topaz oceans, and desert oases – each piece is designed to evoke a feeling of arrival to the right place and a sense of peace, whether on a veranda overlooking a cascading river or on your own balcony apartment looking over the busy city below.
